Built on the near-production AMG.EA platform, the Concept AMG GT XX covered an unprecedented 3,404 miles in 24 hours at the Nardò Ring, surpassing the XPeng P7’s mark set two weeks prior by almost 1,000 miles.
A 36-person Mercedes-AMG and HPP crew, plus 17 pro drivers including George Russell, orchestrated the effort.
Over a rigorous campaign totaling 7 days, 13 hours, and 24 minutes, two cars ran near-continuously. The lead prototype clocked the equivalent of a full lap of Earth’s equator, 24,901 miles, with the second car finishing just 15.5 miles behind. In the process, AMG logged 24 additional endurance records, including the fastest time to complete an equatorial distance in an EV.
The GT XX’s tri-motor setup deploys 1,360 hp via compact axial-flux units, two driving each rear wheel independently and one on the front axle. A slippery 0.192 Cd body and a single-ratio transmission deliver a top speed of at least 224 mph, while the program’s average speed held an extraordinary 186 mph.
Charging performance is the headline: an average 850 kW intake added up to 249 miles in five minutes. Thermal stability underpins this repeatability; the battery and motors are kept at optimum temperatures to maintain power, charge speed, and efficiency lap after lap.
At the core is an oil-cooled pack using 3,000 cylindrical NCMA cells across 22 laser-welded aluminum housings. The tall, thin cell format places every cell surface close to the cooling oil, minimizing temperature gradients. A nose-mounted radiator conditions oil for both the battery and motors, coordinated by predictive thermal algorithms.
Engineers say this regime not only sustains output but also slows aging. Despite enduring repeated 850 kW rapid charges during the record program, the pack reportedly retains at least 90% of its original capacity, with wear more akin to 100,000 real-world miles than the raw distance accrued.
From Prototype to AMG.EA Production Models
The road car won’t mirror the concept’s ultra-low silhouette, rear-seat space demands a taller glasshouse, but the drivetrain principles carry over to AMG’s forthcoming AMG.EA super saloon and SUV. Expect ultra-fast charging, consistent performance, and long-range efficiency even in daily use.
Battery capacity figures remain undisclosed; however, indications suggest no less than 90 kWh in production form, targeting a range beyond the current electric CLA’s 484-mile rating. Mercedes also plans a 1,000 kW charging network across Europe and the UK, aiming for a seamless experience with more than double today’s mainstream speeds.
On-Track Impressions
From a passenger seat, the GT XX feels relentlessly elastic—thrust builds as speed rises, and stability at 155 mph is serene. A mere seven percent throttle sustains that pace with the front motor decoupled, underscoring efficiency at high speed.
Regeneration is equally striking: lifting off at maximum recuperation can feel like an emergency stop, harvesting energy while sparing the friction brakes. Inside, sustainable trims including synthetics derived from recycled GT3 tires sit alongside current-gen Mercedes UX and predictive performance lighting cues.
AMG’s campaign addresses the big EV objections, range, charge speed, and durability under the harshest conditions. As competition from China intensifies, this program signals AMG’s intent to lead on real-world fast-charging performance and endurance-grade thermal control, not just peak power figures.
