In Electric Cars

Mercedes-AMG has pulled the covers off its most ambitious electric creation yet—the Concept GT XX. Packing over 1,360 horsepower, Formula 1-derived battery tech, and a jaw-dropping 850kW charging capability, this all-electric four-door coupe redefines what performance EVs can be. Blending the future of electrification with heritage design cues from the iconic C111, the GT XX signals AMG’s boldest step yet into the world of high-voltage speed.

Mercedes amg gt xx electric supercar 2 1When Mercedes-AMG rolled out the C63 S E-Performance—a four-cylinder hybrid that sparked heated debates—it was clear that the brand known for thunderous V8s was entering a new chapter. One AMG engineer candidly remarked at the time that the division was slowly transforming into a tech company. Fast forward a few years, and that prediction has aged like fine wine. Enter the AMG Concept GT XX: the brand’s first fully electric performance machine designed entirely in-house.

This isn’t a battery-powered version of the AMG GT as you might expect. Instead, the GT XX is a bold new take on the electric grand tourer formula—four doors, coupe-like silhouette, and all the tech wizardry Mercedes-AMG can muster. It’s AMG’s answer to EVs like the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, which recently scorched the Nürburgring with a 7:05 lap time. With this concept, Affalterbach is clearly gunning for EV supremacy.

A New Benchmark in EV Power

Let’s start with the headline figure: over 1,360 horsepower. That’s not a typo. Thanks to three axial flux electric motors—one up front and two out back—the GT XX outmuscles even the Taycan Turbo GT by a full 250 horsepower. Axial flux motors, by design, are significantly smaller and lighter than conventional radial motors, yet produce triple the power density. Because they're mounted along the axle line, they help lower the center of gravity, vital for a performance EV.

AMG is leveraging its Formula 1 hybrid tech to build an 800-volt battery system composed of slim cylindrical cells housed in aluminum and cooled with a special non-conductive oil. This design keeps temperatures even and heat under control, enabling the car to consistently unleash its full power output without thermal fade.

Real Performance, Real Fast Charging

Unlike many high-powered EVs that deliver jaw-dropping performance once or twice before heat limits kick in, the GT XX is engineered for repeatability. Want to hammer the throttle again and again? Go for it. That’s where AMG’s battery tech shines.

And when is it time to recharge? Hold onto your electrons. AMG is claiming an average charging rate of 850kW, with the potential to go even higher, making today’s fastest EVs look sluggish. For context, the Lotus Eletre peaks at 350kW. The GT XX? It promises up to 248 miles of range in just five minutes of charging. The only catch? Chargers that powerful don’t exist yet—but 1,000kW stations are reportedly on the horizon, and AMG wants to be ready.

A Rolling Tribute to the C111

Despite the cutting-edge tech, the GT XX is also a nod to Mercedes’ experimental past, specifically the C111 prototypes of the 1970s. The low, wide front grille, the unique front vent, the pill-shaped rear, and that blazing sunset orange paint all draw inspiration from the gullwinged C111s, which were originally developed as testbeds for new powertrain ideas.

But while the C111 had two simple circular taillights, the GT XX goes full sci-fi with six dramatic rear lights (three per side), plus a glowing MBUX Fluid Light Panel nestled between them. This customizable LED display can show graphics or even messages, though don’t get too excited about trash-talking tailgaters, as inappropriate phrases will be filtered out.

The illuminated AMG-style side skirts and trick speakers behind the headlights, which mimic engine noise, add extra flair. While some of these features are a bit too concept-y to expect in the final product, they hint at AMG’s vision for the electric future: fast, fun, and distinctly AMG.

Aero Meets Active Innovation

Let’s talk aero. The GT XX is as slippery as it is stunning. With a drag coefficient of just 0.198—lower than the Porsche Taycan—it slices through the air like a scalpel. Helping with that are active carbon fiber wheel covers inspired by Group B rally cars. They stay closed for smooth airflow but open to cool the brakes when needed. It’s smart, functional, and oh-so-cool.

Underneath, an intricately sculpted floor keeps the car grounded at speed, negating the need for bulky spoilers or aggressive wings. Top speed? A seriously impressive 224 mph.

Inside the Future: Sustainability Meets Motorsport

Step inside and you’re greeted with a blend of futuristic design and classic AMG spirit. Those glowing orange pipes on the center console? They’re stylized high-voltage cables. The metallic slats around the gear selector resemble PC heat sinks. And the dashboard? It’s crafted to look like a cast camshaft cover, proudly wearing the AMG logo.

Mercedes amg gt xx electric supercar 11 1Even the materials are forward-thinking. Instead of traditional leather, AMG uses upcycled GT3 racing slicks, giving the cabin an eco-conscious edge without losing that premium touch. The steering wheel, borrowed from the AMG One hypercar, reinforces that this is no ordinary EV.

A New Chapter in AMG History

“The CONCEPT AMG GT XX is the next milestone in the history of AMG and forges a whole new dimension of performance,” said AMG boss Michael Schiebe. “We’re bringing groundbreaking technology that redefines high performance. And the best thing is that this car is a true AMG with every fibre of its being.”

That may be true, but purists will still need time to come to terms with an AMG that hums instead of roars. Yet as the industry shifts toward electrification, the GT XX proves AMG isn’t just along for the ride—it’s behind the wheel, pushing hard into the future.

Production Plans? TBD.

Will the AMG Concept GT XX make it to showrooms? That’s still up in the air. Mercedes-AMG hasn’t confirmed a production timeline, but given the investment in design and tech, a road-going version seems likely. Pricing, if it happens, would almost certainly rival (or exceed) that of the Taycan Turbo GT.

Mercedes amg gt xx electric supercar 1The bigger question may be whether the market is ready. As demand for high-performance EVs continues to grow, AMG is betting it can carve out a place at the top of the segment—even if it means leaving V8s behind. Just don’t expect the Euro 7-compliant V8 to sneak into the backseat.

With the Concept GT XX, AMG has fired a serious warning shot across the bow of the EV performance world. It’s bold, it’s fast, and it’s packed with cutting-edge technology wrapped in a nod to Mercedes’ glorious past.
