In Race Cars

Mercedes-AMG has unleashed its most powerful customer racing car, the GT2 Edition W16. With F1-inspired tech, 830 hp on tap, and just 30 units planned, this track-only machine redefines exclusivity for serious collectors and motorsport enthusiasts.

Mercedes amg gt2 edition w16 track car 9 1The Edition W16 wears a familiar heart: AMG's flat-plane-crank 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, a direct descendant of the unit used in the GT Black Series. AMG has fitted new turbochargers and revised engine electronics, taking the familiar race-spec setup to new heights.

In standard tune, the engine produces 707 hp. Flip the F1-inspired Push2Pass and output jumps to a jaw-dropping 830 hp with 737 lb-ft of torque. That surge of power feeds a six-speed sequential gearbox in a transaxle layout, linked to the engine via a carbon torque tube for razor-sharp driveability.

Key figures
Power: 707 hp (standard) / 830 hp (Push2Pass) — Torque: 737 lb-ft — Curb weight: ~1,400 kg — Top speed: 200+ mph — Production: 30 units — Price: €679,000 (~£600k)

Magnesium wheels reduce unsprung mass, while high-performance brakes are there to tame speeds that now exceed 200 mph.

Those components aren't for show; this is hardware that belongs on a race car, not a road-legal GT. The engineering prioritises repeatable lap times, driver confidence, and component durability under sustained stress, much like the approach taken with Ford SuperVan 4.2's Nürburgring record-breaking performance.

Mercedes amg gt2 edition w16 track car 1Aerodynamics receives the same obsessive attention. The car packs a steering-wheel-activated DRS (drag reduction system), active louvres above the front wheels, an enlarged diffuser, a carbon bootlid lip, and aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors. Each detail reduces drag or increases downforce precisely where it matters.

DRS on a customer racer is a clear nod to Mercedes' Formula 1 expertise, and it's a functional one when you're shaving tenths on long straights, similar to the aerodynamic philosophy behind the Brabus Rocket GTC's 986bhp hyper GT design.

Exclusivity, hospitality, and price

Mercedes will build just 30 examples of the Edition W16, each priced at €679,000 (around £600,000). Buyers will receive more than a car: AMG offers a VIP handover at an exclusive European racetrack, a driving session, plus meet-and-greets with members of the Mercedes F1 team.

The package also includes branded essentials like a car cover, OMP race overalls, and a Bell helmet — small touches that underline the model's collector-focused positioning. This level of exclusivity mirrors other recent limited-edition hypercars, including the rare McLaren Senna GTR auction offerings.

Signature touch from Kimi Antonelli

Rising motorsport talent Kimi Antonelli is listed as a prominent patron of the project. He has hand-signed the door sills on every Edition W16 and tested the car himself. Antonelli called the Push2Pass "a truly sensational feature" and praised the car's balance of pace and safety, saying the model "immediately inspires confidence."

What this means for track-day culture

The Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16 blurs the line between factory race car and ultra-exclusive customer special. For the tiny group able to buy in, it's not only a performance statement, it's a ticket to the inner world of AMG Motorsport.

Limited runs like this change expectations for bespoke track days and collector experiences. When a car arrives with direct F1 carryover tech, VIP paddock access, and a signed piece of provenance, it becomes more than a fast machine: it becomes a status object within modern motorsport culture. This trend extends beyond AMG, with companies like Gordon Murray Special Vehicles creating ultra-exclusive S1 LM and Le Mans GTR models.

The GT2 Edition W16 is a pure, unashamedly race-first machine built for speed, engineered for the circuit, and reserved for a select few. Stay tuned for testing updates and first-drive impressions as these track beasts hit European circuits.
