In Performance

A new spark of hope for Mitsubishi Lancer Evo fans has emerged after a senior engineer hinted the iconic performance sedan may return.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution I first generation rally heritage
The original Lancer Evolution I established Mitsubishi's performance credentials with rally-bred engineering and aggressive styling.

Speaking with Australian outlet Drive at the Tokyo motor show, senior Mitsubishi engineer Kaoru Sawase confirmed the company hasn't entirely ruled out a new Lancer Evolution.

"We have a dream, of course, for Lancer Evolution. It's my personal dream," Sawase said, leaving the door open to a revival.

Why it Matters

Sawase isn't just any engineer; he led development of Mitsubishi's Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC), the tech that gave past Evos their handling edge.

His comments matter because they link the Evo's heritage directly to Mitsubishi's engineering DNA and rally pedigree.

Electrification and Expertise

Any modern Evo would likely include electrification.

Mitsubishi already has EV performance experience, including a high-power Pikes Peak electric prototype, and can tap alliance partners for platforms and powertrain know-how.

Short-Term Impact

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution performance sedan all-wheel drive system
The Lancer Evolution's advanced all-wheel drive system and turbocharged performance made it a legend among performance sedans.

Even a concept or performance study would create a halo effect, energizing enthusiasts and sharpening Mitsubishi's image.

With the U.S. range currently crossover-heavy, a performance halo could translate to showroom interest and stronger brand perception.

Conclusion — Expert Take

For now, it's a statement, not a program.

But Sawase's words show internal appetite and technical credibility — the two ingredients any credible Evo revival would need.

If Mitsubishi moves beyond the idea stage, expect a performance package that blends S-AWC heritage with electrified powertrains and rally-bred dynamics.
