A rare Mitsubishi EVO MR VIII FQ-400, known as the Y4 EVO, is now up for auction on Bonhams Cars. With just 30,600 miles and collector-grade condition, this rally-inspired icon combines extreme performance with striking design, making it a must-see for EVO enthusiasts and car collectors alike.

“It’s just too good to use every day,” he explains. “This car deserves to be driven occasionally, maybe on a track, not on the daily commute.”

The FQ-400’s exterior is unmistakably functional, designed to maximize airflow for engine cooling while shedding heat efficiently. Its aggressive styling recalls the spirit of high-performance super GTs that combine aesthetics with purpose.

Aesthetic touches exist, but the car’s design prioritizes performance over subtlety, giving it an intimidating presence on the road.

The colour Stone Grey Metallic (paint code A39) is a statement in itself, striking and assertive. Combined with the massive adjustable carbon-fibre rear spoiler and a sizeable exhaust pipe, the FQ-400 announces its presence loudly and proudly.

The Ralliart mudflaps have protected the flanks, and the 17-inch lightweight alloys, hidden beneath flared arches reminiscent of Group B rally cars, are free of kerbing. Enthusiasts will appreciate the attention to detail, similar to other unique performance cars that balance form and function.

The wheels wear a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires (235/45ZR17) from 2020, still in great condition, hinting at an owner who prioritizes maintenance. Behind the wheels, four red brake calipers peek through, completing a package that balances aggressive styling with racing heritage.

The only minor blemish is a flaw on the nearside of the carbon-fibre roof spoiler, a small imperfection on an otherwise pristine exterior.

Front occupants are treated to ultra-grippy Recaro seats, an 180mph speedometer, and a rev counter complete with warning lights for Snow, Gravel, and Tarmac. A carbon-fibre dashboard trim and a plaque denoting #47 in the FQ-400 run are subtle nods to its special status.

The steering wheel and gearknob, while modest, reinforce Mitsubishi’s philosophy: spend the money where it matters. The interior has aged exceptionally well; the seat, controls, and dashboard remain virtually unblemished after nearly two decades.

Rear passengers still enjoy ample legroom, and the boot conceals a barely-used space-saver spare wheel under a plywood floor. Even minor practicalities, like a rear wash/wipe, are included. Its usability mirrors classic sports cars that combine collector appeal with everyday practicality.

Top Gear noted that, in the hands of an average driver, the FQ-400 is both surprisingly easy to drive and quick across country. This duality allows the car to scare the enthusiast while remaining usable for everyday tasks.

The only interior flaw is minor wear on the driver’s heel area of the carpet, easily hidden with the Ralliart floor mats.

Mechanical History: Meticulously Maintained

This FQ-400 has an impressive service record. Initially, it received dedicated Ralliart main dealer servicing up to 2012, followed by independent specialist care. Key milestones include:

  • May 2005 – Nov 2013: Regular servicing from 845 miles up to 21,289 miles
  • April 2018: 27,816 miles
  • May 2021: 30,008 miles, including new cambelts, tensioner, water pump, brake discs and pads, Bilstein B6 dampers, and full suspension bushes with alignment

The 2.0-litre turbocharged engine runs flawlessly, though it produces a bit of clatter when cold, a characteristic of racing engines with looser tolerances. Once warmed, it quiets down and revs beautifully, delivering the iconic FQ-400 exhaust note praised by Top Gear for its audible thrills on overrun. Car enthusiasts might also appreciate the sound of other high-performance V12 supercars.

Evo mr viii fq 400 y4 bonhams auction 4 1Cosmetically, the engine bay and underside are remarkably clean. Rust is limited to minor fasteners, and the car has recently received protective treatments, making it concours-ready in appearance. Its meticulous upkeep compares to other collectible restomods.

Why This FQ-400 Stands Out

Few cars in the EVO lineage carry the same blend of heritage, performance, and collectibility as the MR VIII FQ-400. Its low mileage, extensive maintenance history, and well-preserved condition make it a rare opportunity for enthusiasts. Similar to other restomod masterpieces, it is a showcase of care and performance.

Now available through Bonhams Cars, the Y4 EVO presents an exciting chance to own a collector-grade EVO that is equally at home on the track or in a prized garage collection.
